In a 3AW FM interview, security expert Gina Field spoke with Jacqui about councils hiring private security for suburbs facing rising crime. Gina noted Wyndham Council’s crime rates increased by 25.4%, with 62% of these crimes unsolved. She explained councils often act after repeated resident complaints, meetings with police, and safety committees. Gina shared her experience providing similar patrols in New South Wales, where security teams helped improve safety and supported local businesses. Cafes and shops opened earlier and closed later because staff felt safer with security present.
She clarified security providers do not replace police or act as armed officers. Instead, they address minor incidents, easing pressure on police resources. Gina emphasised the presence of security teams helped reduce violence and antisocial behaviour in troubled areas. She pointed out Wyndham’s 350,000 residents rely on around 500 police officers, with fewer active at any time due to leave.
Gina recognised many residents dislike paying council rates for security in only one suburb. She said in her own trial, people who initially opposed council-funded security later became upset when it ended. She also argued deeper problems exist, including police funding shortages, a lack of officers, and court decisions undermining law enforcement efforts. Gina concluded that while private security isn’t a permanent fix, it can improve safety when police resources fall short.
