With over 217,000 households reporting break-ins in the past year—and Victoria seeing a 15% increase—Gina warned that many Australians have become too reliant on technology such as CCTV, smart locks, and motion sensors. While these tools are useful, she explained that criminals are adapting quickly and often see cameras as little more than data collectors.
Instead, Gina urged viewers to return to the basics of home security—simple, inexpensive habits that genuinely deter intruders. She recommended visible deterrents like “Beware of the Dog” signs, steering wheel locks, and wheel clamps; maintaining neat gardens and clear sightlines; and even adding gravel driveways or bells on gates to alert homeowners to movement. For high-value vehicles, bollards have become increasingly common in driveways as a strong physical barrier.
Gina’s key message was clear: technology alone isn’t enough. The best security comes from a layered approach—combining smart tech with practical, everyday actions that make your home look occupied, cared for, and difficult to target.
